Hi guys, I am planning on buying a used outboard motor and rebuild it since, the new one are too expensive.

Is this a good route to go?
I'm looking for a 20-30HP outboard, I've seen some that currently runs, for about $350, and I want to buy it and rebuild it.

Where can I get a kit to rebuild outboard?

About how much will the kit run me?

I'll be doing all the work myself.

Thanks
Mike

Well your going to need for sure gasket kits, rings, pistons and depending on how the cyl looks maybe a re sleeve. You may want to replace the crank bearings depending on they feel. While working on it, i would at least replace the impeller in the lower unit.

The rebuild kit include the following.

# PISTONS/ RINGS/ WRISTPINS/ RETAINERS.
# COMPLETE GASKET & SEAL KIT.
# CRANKSHAFT MAIN BEARINGS
# CONNECTING ROD LARGE & SMALL END BEARINGS.
# CONNECTING ROD BOLTS
# CRANKSHAFT SEAL RINGS ON FORCE/MERCURY PRODUCTS WHERE NEEDED
# GASKET SEALING COMPOUNDS AND CRANKCASE SEALER.

It's just under $500 from www.maxrules.com, under 40HP powerhead rebuild.

So I figure I find a motor that about 30 HP for cheap and rebuild the complete thing, replace the impeller also like you said. Should not run me no more than $700, and If I pay $300 for the use motor. I'll get a complete rebuild 30 HP motor for $1000.

Vs going and buy a new one for over $3K. Might be just as good.

Am I thinking this straight or just dreaming?

Thanks
Mike

From what I've seen on Craigslist, you should be able to pick up a 20-30hp that runs right for about under 1k. Might be a good winter project. But i'd rather be on the water over the summer.

Could make sense if the used motor is rebuildable. If the crank isn't broken and the cylinders scored beyond boring and the lower unit full of chunks. For a thousand bucks you can find a good one that will run for years. Buying someones "pig in the poke" is risky.

Well I a not going to go with the rebuild idea, I'm going to find a good used working one, or I'll just get a new 25HP 2 stroke one for my 13' inflatable.
