Hello I just bought a 1986 ranger bass boat with only mid section of motor there and all wires cut.......... all gauges and throttle controls are quicksilver and wiring as far as i can tell..... I picked 1986 force 125 hp outboard my question is can I still use the old wiring harness to motor ? because the wires from harness are different colors then the ones the sticker on outboard here is picture of out board where wires hook up now the wires that come out of harness are 1= Tan 2=Yellow/Black 3=Tan/Blue 4=Black 5=Grey 6=Red 7=Purple 8=Yellow/Red 9=Black/Yellow,,,,,,,ok I figured out yellow/red go to Start on outboard ,,,and Black go to ground,,Red to battery But not sure what wire goes to Tach, Magneto ,Choke, ,Heat Temp, ,,Magneto Can anyone help with this ??

The color code was standardized some time ago.
You can adapt the wiring if you can figure out the the harness.

The Tach probably won't work.
You need a 20 pole tach. The one you have in the boat could be a 6 /12 pole???
The shifter probably won't work either.

E-bay "force outboard wiring"
It comes up with controls and wiring harnesses.

If the switch is not hard wired like many Mercury switches are, then you can arbitrarily assign a color to a function. On the engine terminal board, yellow is start, white and blue are stop circuit, green is choke, orange is overheat signal, red is power and black is ground. Purple is usually reserved for tachometer signal.. If the switch IS hard wired then it will be easier to simply cut the wires, terminate them and attach to a new 6 pole push-to-choke switch. White and blue sare attached to the two "M" terminals on the switch while blue at the engine end is jumped to the ground terminal.

Mercury wiring usually uses the black with yellow tracer as the stop wire and tan is usually the overheat indicator.

Cables can not be used and you must buy another control box with tghreaded end Telelflex control cables (either red or black). You can use either a US Marine control box or a Chrysler control box.

Keep looking!! I've seen them for $30
The 86 used the plug in type.
You can used the other just use butt connectors.
