Outboard mounting bolt pattern?

I have read that outboard mounting bolt patterns where standardized in the early 1980s. Is this true? Will 2 different manufactures outboards of the same hp and shaft length match up to the holes already in my transom?

Also is there a published template of the standard pattern/s?

The standard bolt pattern used by all outboard manufacturers was the Johnson-Evinrude design that they came out with for the 1960 75 hp V4 outboard.

my 1982 90 hp evinrude matched up with 1996 60 hp mariner no problem.201160hp evinrude matched up with 1982 90 hp evinrude.only time i ever had a issue was with a 70,s merc tower of power inline 6 that was narrower pattern .1980,s up no issues.
