I would like to know where to get the 4 1/2" x 1/2" fine-threaded bolts that are used to mount an outboard. I would like to find them locally, and wondered if Fastenal or some such place would have the stainless steel bolts, rather than buy them for 3x the price at a marine dealer.

thanks

Re: Outboard Mounting Bolts

Look in your yellow pages for bolts and nuts. For instance we have a place called Tidewater Fasteners that carry every kind and size of bolts and nuts known to man.

Believe it or not, Ace Hardware has a damn good selection of SS fasteners...

Well, I went to my local True Value Hardware, and was shocked to find the bolts, and even the 1/2 x 20 Nylok Stainless nuts.

Thanks

Re: Outboard Mounting Bolts

I was told by boat/machine shop that using the fine thread bolts is not a good idea on older hulls. I asked why and they said the fine thread bolts are very easy to overtighten and crush the transom and after awhile the clamping pressure reduces and then the bolts are loose. They suggested using large thick washers and the coarse thread bolts and tighten to snug and then 1/4 to half turn more. If you hear any cracking sound then its crushed.

They make these handy items to keep from crushing the transom as have described.

Re: Outboard Mounting Bolts

are we splitting hairs???

wouldnt a 1/2"-13 work just fine????

I made ss strip straps for inside the hull to help spread the pressure out too!!

the ones i bought were about $4, if you buy them at the marine store they are about $9

but you only have to buy 4...whats the big deal??

the price of th SS washers will make your jaw drop even more!!!

I have bought a lot of SS hardware for my boats the last year....and while the bolts and nuts are kinda expensive...i dont see why the washers are 75% of the cost of a bolt!!!!!
