Outboard not start from ignition switch

I have a '72 Chrysler 35HP that I can only start with a screwdriver across the solinoid. I have checked the wires from the switch for continuity and is ok. I've tried jumping the switch wires but, no good. I can find no fuse problems. Any suggestions.

Jimpoc
Not real sure on the older chryslers, but there should be a main fuse in the engine compartment. I would trace down the wires from the switch to the motor and either try to find a blown fuse or a broken wire. Does the Motor start when you jump it or does it just crank? Could also be a neutral safety switch. Try moving the control lever back and forth from forward to reverse a little, while you turn the key to start it. I believe the switch is located near the shift linkage in the engine compartment. Maybe others more familiar with your Motor will have more info.

You may have a bad solenoid from what you say. Does it shut off all right? Is it magneto ignition ?

Sorry Jimpoc,

Don't know your motor BUT,....
After you trace down what rickdb1boat suggested,..

IF the poblem is still there,..
Well, sounds like a symptom that is very typical of a BAD Solenoid (low current relay that engages HI Current to the starter motor).

Let us know what you find

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!
