Outboard oil loadup.

I recently unhooked the VRO on my 97 Johnson 225 Venom. Being that I'm now running 50:1 will the motor load up on oil when I'm not running it in the upper RPM range? I notice that I can't get my maximum RPM if I've been running around at slower speeds and thus over oiling the engine. Any thoughts?? Thanks

Re: Outboard oil loadup.

If you are mixing at exactly 50:1 it should have little effect on performance.Trolling at slower speeds for extended periods however tends to oil load up most two stroke outboards.Your later model VRO doesn't vary the ratio anyway but rather maintains the mix at around 50:1 throughout the rpm range. The earlier vro s varied the mix from around 100:1 at trolling speeds to 50:1 at WOT.

What do your sparkplugs look like and are they of the correct Champion brand and gapped to specs?

Fisherman, as OB said, on your year model, the VRO was 50:1 WOT and 50:1 at Idle. You aren't any richer on oil at idle now than you were.
A new set of QL82C plugs gapped at .035-.040 may help more than anything.

Using a good Full Synthetic oil will completly solve your oiling problems. No more fouling of plugs at low RPMs.

Just losing speed at high rpms could be a bunch of things not related to type of oil or plugs. If in good condition and tuned properly, that Johnson (like 99% of all modern ob engines) will troll all day long with regular oil at 50:1 without a peep of problems at any speed.
