Re: Outboard Oil

Is it TCW-III??? Does it say on the container anywhere that it is NMMA certified????? If not, I'd stay away from it. :)

Re: Outboard Oil

I was given a case of this stuff when I recently bought my boat. When I took it in to be serviced by an outboard mechanic he told me to get rid of that "cheap crap". He told me to run a major outboard brand name oil such as Yamaha or Mercury oil. I have a Suzuki which is a very rare motor in northern Ohio, so you won't find Suzuki oil around here. Anyways, should I go with this guys advice? I also heard that some of the cheap oils are the same stuff in name brand oils?

Could be some truth to both. I feel like if you stick to a major manufacturers oil (Of outboards).
Why chance it with a new rig??? If something happens, and you happen to be using Johnson/Evinrude XD25, your dealer is going to be more apt to stand behind you than if you were using Fred's 2-cycle boat oil........ :D

Do some searches.

TCW3
Walmart oil
supertech oil
pennzoil

Lots to read, everything has been covered in depth, including who manufactures some of the oils.

If it is TCW3 and NMMA (National Marine Manufacturers Association) rated and approved, then it is fine, AND it will not void warranty. Thats been settled in court, and is now the law of the land.

Re: Outboard Oil

Hey, for all we know, and in all probability like in many products all outboard oil, regardless of the name on the container is from the same source. I will gaurantee you that !! NO !! outboard manufacturer makes !! ANY !! outboard oil. For instance, did you know that a person in Indiana invented, and developed the "Vise Grip" pliers? That no matter what name is on the vise grip like tool (with the exception of imported knock offs), craftsman, KB tools, vise grip, Snap-on, or what have you, if made in the US it is made in (or at least 30 years ago was) a small machine shop in Indiana. Whirlpool does not make any water heaters, but you can go to Lowes, and no where else, and purchase a whirlpool water heater, manufactured by a company that you probably never heard of, and I do not know but they may manufacture every hot water heater made. Why? Because Lowes made a survey and determined that whirlpool was the most well known, and respected name in appliences, so secured a license (??????) from whirlpool to have another company manufacture water heaters, put the name whirlpool on them and sell them as whirlpool, which they are not. Wallmart sells a sunbeam pop-cornpopper, that is junk, and a complete chinese knock off of a "HIGH QUALITY WEAREVER" corn popper(that cost twicw as much). Sunbeam does not manufacture a corn popper, but merely sold the rights ($$$$$) to wallmart, to use their name to market a piece of junk. Many refrigerators sold in the US, are manufactured by a vacuam cleaner company (electrolux) in a plant that used to be a frgidare plant in Anderson, SC regardless of what name is on the applience. I am not sure, but I do not think that GE (which owns NBC) manufactures any applience whatsoever, although you can purchase many with the name GE on them. This is all, no matter how you look at it examples of fraud, and a rip off of the American people by big business. Are you a gardner? Do you purchase from wayside gardens, whose mailing address is #1 Garden Lane, Hodges, SC. Well, there is no Wayside gardens, they exist only on paper, there is a Hodges, SC which barely exist, as it is no more than a meeting of two highways, but in Hodges there is no #1 Garden Lane, although you can find their web page, and get their catalogue. There was a time when a manufacturer was proud of their name, and if their name was on a product, you knew it was a quality product, but not today, as a manufacturer's name (which used to be a sign of quality) is for sale in this day and age to the highest bidder. I am not an employee of any of these companies, I have merely had problems with some of the junk they have tried to foist off on the public, and in trying to get my complaint to the right person, found out some facts that in reality should be very embarassing to US industry. :D :)  :(

Re: Outboard Oil

PS!! by the way, you are a fisherman? you like quality products? Do not buy them from wally's world! A name brand fishing reel purchased from wally is not the same as the identical product purchased from your local sports store. When Wally shoots down the price, he also knocks down the quality. Another store is selling something wally does not carry, wally's buyers go to the manufacturer and pressures for a lower wholesale price, tells them hey, sell to us cheaper (wholesale) or you will soon be out of business, because one of these days wally will be the only merchant left in business, so the small manufacturer (smaller than wally that is) has no choice, sell it to wally cheaper, Buuuut!!!!, to sell it cheaper, he has to manufacture it cheaper!! You the American public gets it in the "A*S", bung-holed again!! :D  :D  :D  :D

Re: Outboard Oil

I've decide to run Walmart's Supertech since many here in the forums recommend it as the best "cheap" oil. I'm such a cheap a*s. lol

Supertech is good stuff! It is identical in color and smells like Mercury Quicksilver oil....could be the same stuff. I've run it for years in Yamaha, Force, Merc and OMC's. Works great.

Re: Outboard Oil

All things being equal Im glad others have the same views and concerns as I! For the most part I stay with the name brands when it comes to parts, or lubricants for my boat or vehicles. But in this day and age as we all know if there is something out there that we like to do, its going to cost us money to do it! I as most like to save money any way I can. OEM oils are expensive, we all know this............however we all want our engines to run long and hard without any problems so we tend to listen to the marketing propaganda thrown at us by the companies that hold us hostage! Ive worked in the field of predictive maintenance for going on 20 years now and have been envolved in lubricant analysis for about as long. Im also a thermographer which means that I work with infrared camera systems. Im going to pass on a little information to all concerned about the ability of a lubricant to lower internal heating................" in a nutshell"..............SYNTHETICS work. After setting back and looking at the big picture, the biggest part of saving money boils down to not having to get that engine rebuilt!..............thanks for the input guys!
