Any advice on the best way to remove a 75 Hp. Mariner outboard? Can I lay it on it's side/back while I replace transom and stringers? What would the approx. weight be?

Thanks for the help!!

Re: Outboard Removal

we generaly use some sort of a crane to lift motors......however a 78 hp....two people can lift it off and drag it around.

as far as storage....

this is the method we like.....http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=525609

but laying it on its side...or standing it up and leaning it on something, while not preferred and dangerous....can be done.

Re: Outboard Removal

I used a 2 ton come-along secured through a 6 inch ceiling rafter with a 4X4 across 5 rafters to distribute weight, so the eye bolt went through 10 inches of wood and spread out over 5 rafters, easily held the 300lb motor (mine was 90HP) Which ever method you use, be careful! the stand is great, easy to build, and using a hoist method 1 person can do it by themselves

Best method is to remove it with some type of crane/hoist and build a stand for the motor to be kept on.

With that said I've removed motors as large as an Evinrude 115 with a second person helping and have laid motors on their sides (gently) with no ill effects.

I know it's a little late but I would like to chime in with a thumbs up for that stand. If you have a miter saw and even mediocre carpentry skills you can build it in less than an afternoon. Two healthy strong guys should be able to lift the motor from the boat to the stand if you don't have a hoist. Just put the stand as close to the boat/motor as you can and move from 1 to the other. A third person would be helpful for guidance/alignment, but not a necessity.
