Outboard Security question

Hi all,

I have just bought a 2003 Mercury 90 and I'm wondering what others do to secure their outboards motors from being stolen? Maybe I'm being a little parinoid, but.... my boat sits on my cottage lot out in the open. I have it chained to the trailer, but bolt cutters would take care of that no problem. Is there anything I can use that can not be cut by boltcutters or hack saw?

Thanks.

Re: Outboard Security question

You can remove the wheels from the trailer. A common trick around here and also good for the tyres. A lock for the engine? Remove the (hm words) coupling on the trailer if you don't use a lock for it. What are you most worried about, stolen boat and trailer or just the engine?
A good insurance will make you sleep better.
Remove the hood from the engine, less atractive to steal. (Yeah, really hard to steal a hood from another engine somewhere else  )

I'm mainly concerned with the motor. There has been some problems with outboards disappearing off of boats  near by.

zikka,

There are outboard motor locks available. The best ones replace one of the mounting bolt nuts with one that needs a special key to remove.

I'm sure your dealer carries them.
