Outboard Shaft Length

I recently purchased a Salter Sport 320. Specs say it should have an outboard with a 15" short leg shaft. I've found a Mariner 8hp for a good deal but the seller didn't know the shaft length. I asked him to measure from the inside of the top of the mounting clamp to the bottom of the cavitation plate and sent a diagram. He came back and said it was 17.5". Would this be a problem? Is it more likely that it is a 15" but he's measuring from an incorrect point(s)?

Re: Outboard Shaft Length

Ask seller to send you a pic of the engine to have a look, there's a great visual difference between a 15" and a 20" shaft engine. Check lenght specs.

My 1986 Johnson 9.9 short shaft measures 17.5" as well.

My 2007 Mercury 6 HP long shaft that I use as a sailboat kicker measure around 22"

Both were measured from the clamp to the cav plate.

It's a short shaft and it's fine. Jap engines are always longer than the boat transoms by a little bit.

Short shaft is 15 inches
Long shaft is 20 inches
