I've determined that my mechanical steering cable is shot. What are some good sites to buy a complete package from? My boats' going on 15 years old so I might as well replace everything while I'm at it. Checked out teleflex site and called but that's useless. Place must have 1 customer service rep. Anyways anybody have any url's of good sites dealing with mechanical outboard steering parts?

Hi PJHMTH2000, Teleflex has numerous kits to replace your steering system with. To help determine what you need I need to ask a few questions. The steering cable system in your boat now, is it a one piece cable or does it use the pulley system cable. If it has the one piece cable, look under the dash and tell me if the piece under the dash where the cable connects is a straight bar about 12 inches long or a round looking unit the cable goes into. Also what motor do you have int he baot. Let me know. ;)

Re: Outboard steering parts

I have a 1987 mariner 135 hp v-6 outboard. currently I have a teleflex system. Haven't had a chance to measure cable but the helm part # is sh5023 /sh5075 looks like I have a dual unit setup but the cable only goes to one. One piece cable that screws into this assembly directly...rotary mechanical assy I would wager.

HI again, With the SH5023 helm, Teleflex calls that thier SAFE-T helm. One way to replace it that might be a little cheaper is to get the Teleflex SAFE-T QUICK CONNECT PACKAGE. It includes the helm, bezel and cable. It is a Teleflex # 137XX. The XX is the cable length. If you remove the old cable, there should be a length on it. I would guess that cable to be a SSC72 XX. Hope this helps :)
