Google TPWD online and go to their website. All the boating info is there. You have to download a couple of forms, fill them out and maill them in to Austin with the fees. It's real easy if your boat/motor were previously registered in TX or another state requiring same type documentation. If not, you will have to do a couple of other forms. Hopefully you can still contact the previous owner for the necessary info, if not it gets a little hairy and frustrating.

Re: outboard title in texas

I went to my county court house and told the lady behind the taxes, titles and license desk what good looking grandkids she has.

She helped me a lot.

You will need:
Pencil rubbing of id plate showing model and ID number.
Bill of sale/cert of origin/notarized statements of previous owner(s).

If there is no ID plate there is another procedure to acquire a salvage title. Slightly more complicated that IRS 1040.

Far as I know they just started making you title them separately, with separate fees, a few years ago. Example, I bought a 73 Ebbtide trihull with 73 Merc 500 used in '99...boat and outboard were registered under one title as one unit. Sold that boat in '05 and acquired a 14 foot tinny and later a 58 Johnson sea horse. Had to title each separately and get an affidavit from the former outboard owner that he had owned it since new and never titled it before in Texas. Was a hassle, but do-able. So if your 78 outboard was previously registered in Texas, it should be on file and maybe the title is transferable to you...again for a fee. I'm looking for fish hook tax as the next step from TPWD...that's when I'll take up bow fishing. Good luck. The Ancient Mariner is right, the gals at the county tax/title offices are much easier to deal with the counter folk at TPWD field offices. 2nd easiest is a phone call to Austin and direct mail to the person you talk too...appropriate dinero enclosed.

Re: outboard title in texas

I have a 75 cooper 16' with a 65 hp suzuki. i am trying to get them both titled and registered, but I am having the hardest time locating the original title holder. I've contacted tpwd and they basically told me that I was screwed if i didnt find the title holder. Any suggestions? This is my first boat and I really want to get it in the water this summer.
