Mercury 45, power trim. classic 50

My outboard is having starting problems. When i turn the key it just clicks. I have checked the starter, and seems to be working fine. I assume the square black bit above the starter, is the soliniod. I also checked that, and that also seems to be fine. Althouh i have tried to bridge it with the starter and it still won't kick in. I get a spark or kick for a split second then when i try again i get nothing. I am now at a loss as i don't have a manual. I can pull a car engine apart but as i am finding, out a boat can be very diff. I have also changed the spark plugs. still just a click at the solinoid. Could this be the problem. A new solinoid required.???

Re: outboard won't start

could be a loose connection at the solenoid. the bolts tend to loosen up or strip. try to tighten the connection and if that doesnt work a new solenoid would be around $20

find out the easy way,,,,just run a + jumper to the starter, if it cranks its the solenoid, if it wont,,, its the starter
