I do most of my work with outboards but have been getting into I/O's more and more. I have a question on shimming. My bud has an Alpha upper gearcase we are rebuilding. I got the shimming tools and a manual (OEM). I followed the procedure on shimming the vertical drive gear. The procedure says for new gears it should take 6 to 10lbs of torque to turn them using a lower unit drive shaft with a pinion nut on the end. It also says that if the torque is not obtained, add shims under the upper bearing race, the one in the top cover, until the torque is obtained.

This really seems tight to me. Like you can't spin the gear with your fingers with it this tight. Am I misreading the manual or is this correct?

Thanks in advance guys.

OK guys....got back into it and re-did the shimming and got the rolling torque to inch lbs. The thing is smooth as silk. My bud will try it sometime during the week if the river ever gets back to normal.

Thanks to all you I/O wrenches for your help. I owe youins' one. :)
