Outboat submerged

I have a 6HP Yamaha outboard that is about 3 years old. I keep it chained to the edge of the canal and two weeks ago if flooded and my motor got covered in water. The water is not very salty and with all the rain and fresh water running into the canal I thought it would be OK.<br /><br />The local Yamaha dealer said it has to be totally striped and probably not worth it.<br /><br />Is this correct. Thanks.

the highly polished metal surfaces inside rust very fast when exposed to water. typically if the motor isnt made to run within a day its toast.

hello<br /> the reason for stripping it is to clean the sand from it. to just restart it is easy. flush the fuel systen and check for spark. sometimes salty water will short out the kill switch.<br /> you can do a complete teardown and reassembly on that motor in 8 hours or so. not a lot there.<br /> the piston,rods and crank all come out the back. pull it apart and flush it with solvent. diesel will work. I have done some 8 hp recently and the rental company was in a bind so no new seals or gaskets,other than the exhaust and base were used. but these motors spent overnight in the pond and were very sandy.I started on a saturday afternoon and had them delivered for monday morning . the price was right as well . the rental place supplied all the parts on this one <br />but the big object is to make it run and get the water out or it will be junk. afterwards you have to remove the flywheel and clean the stator and lube the surfaces.

Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.<br /><br />The Yanaha dealer got it going OK and said that it runs a bit rough but should be OK. He said to run it a little rich for a while. So, it wasn't as bad as he first made out

hello<br /> if flushed correctly it wont run rough and why run it rich? no reason to<br /> lubricating it after it rusts is like buying horse feed after the horse starved to death.<br /> 2 grains of sand in a roller bearing makes it a slider bearing. sliders dont last long. but I have seen and restarted many sunk ones in my time. some on the net skiffs sank severl times a year. so maybe ya got lucky.
