For the past 5-6 years I used Tempo clear antifouling paint on my outdrives with great results.Last year the Tempo paint was taken off the shelves because it was bad for the enviorment,or something like that,so i tried the Dolphinite antifouling spray.THIS STUFF WAS HORRIBLE!I had so much growth on my drives that when I pulled the boat out for the season,I powerwashed 2 living crabs the size of baseballs. Has anyone else had problems with this paint,if so,any suggestions on what to use?

I have the same concern........I just rebuilt my outdrive and repainted it. I don't know what to use to prevent growth here either.

Re: outdrive anifouling paint

I have heard of the problems with the Dolphinite. Last summer I had it sprayed with Alumaspray (tin based paint) by a local yard. Still had some growth. I don't think you can buy any of the tin based ones anymore (although the yards may be able to). The only thing you can legally use is the Trilux for alumimum, but you have to use the special primer (Primicon) first. I have heard that it works well but have not used it yet. It is available in a brush on version, which I am going to try this spring.

For what it's worth, I've used the Trilux on my outboard lower unit here in Maryland -- with good success. I used the brush-on stuff with a couple of liberal coats initially, then a refresher coat or two during the season. I've also used the Interlux clear spray on the brass rudder and prop of my inboard, and that has held up very well. I run the boat regularly, but don't pull it every year -- only a couple of barnacles on the edge of the rudder when I checked late this summer (would have been on for over a year without touchup).

oldboat1, I looked into the Interlux spray for aluminum. It looks like it only comes in black and white, where and when did you get the clear stuff?
