Outdrive Chatter

I have a 1984 Mercruiser 260. It runs great except when I am in forward and idling along I notice quite a bit of "chatter" coming from the outdrive. Is this normal? How do you know if the U joints are bad? Thanks for any input.

does the noise get worse when turning either direction?

if so the u-joints are bad

the gimbal bearing could aslo be the source of the noise, usually a growling noise

when was the last time the drive was off for service?

Yes it does get a little worse when you turn it left or right. I don't when it was last serviced.
