Outdrive DP-SM - noise at gear engagement

This is a brand new DP-SM drive unit replaced early May.
When I engage forward or reverse I am hearing a "clunk". Just like a Mercruiser.....
The other VP drive on the boat does not make any noise when engaging reverse or forward.
Oil level is OK and there are no other noises during operation.
Any suggestion?

Was a new shift cable installed? Is it OEM or aftermarket? I just recently replaced my shift cable from a Teleflex to Volvo, the smoothness in shifting between the two engines is very noticeable.

Thank You for the help.
the cable is OEM and was not replaced. It is working OK and moves freely.
The issue is not the smoothless in shifting but the fact that when shifting it makes a noise at the gear engagement.

Could be caused by your idle speed being set too high.

engines are 5.7GXi - idle is the same on both engines - However I will check it next time I will be at the boat.
