Outdrive Flush?

Hi again,

So I got my outdrive back on. Went right on. I'm ready to fill it, but I was wondering if there is anything I can use to flush it out? The old oil didn't look good, I think there was maybe some water in it. Looked like it was pretty old, but what do I know? I'm pretty sure that the shift shaft cover and seal I just replaced was leaking so that's probably where the water came from...

Anyway, since I still have the drain plug out, is there any thing safe to maybe dump into the top dipstick hole and let drain right out the bottom drain hole to flush out any remaining oil or other crap? Or should I just fill it with new lube and not worry about it?

I am going to check it for any new water in the oil after a few runs to see if it's still getting any in the gearcases...

Thanks!

Re: Outdrive Flush?

You can just pump an extra quart of gear oil through and let it drain. You may want to have the unit pressure and vacuum tested to check for leaks either way.I recommend filling it with synthetic oil when you are ready to fill er up.Charlie

I believe thats what you need to check the pressure.I dont recall how much pressure it should hold so you may have to do a seperate post to find out.If there were water in it ,the vacuum test may be more critical for you.Charlie
