I just bought a 1986 Bayliner that has a a Aq131/275 Volvo Penta. I want to change the gear lube, in the manual it says to replace with oil the same as the engine oil SAE 10W/30 or 10W/40; is this correct? Can I use an SAE 10W30 or 40 in the lower unit case?

The older drives can be filled from the top. Some have a fill port to the right and above the shift lever. On others, one of the screws on top acts as a fill port. Leave the dipstick out to act as a vent. Instructions are in the manual. You'll also find the directions for pressure testing the drive in the manual. It makes sense to drain and test instead of just adding oil.

Would it work to use gear lube? Would I be at risk of damaging the engine? I have talked to a few people who have said they thought it was odd to use 10W40 marine grade oil in the lower unit

They are designed to work with motor oil. The cone clutch won't work properly with the heavier lube. In addition, the lower slinger pump can be damaged if using gear lube. If people don't want to believe you, just open up the manual and show them what the manufacturer recommends.
