Outdrive Gear Ratios

Hey Folks,

Just a quick question about gear ratios.. What is the purpose of them? I know 120 and 140's use a 1.98 ratio, and the bigger the engine, the lower the ratios go. Just curious is all.

Props is the reason for gear ratio's. For best overall performance you need to be between 17" and 21" pitch. In order for the different engines with different torque and horse power to stay in that range, the manufacturer uses gear ratio's.

Gear ratio's is why a V8 and a 4 cylinder Alpha drive can both have the same size prop.
