1986 18ft bow/r 4.3 205 hp alpha 1 13x 23 prop After putting a used prop in good cond on the boat I set out for some fishing about 15 min out I opened the throttle and started moving then stop to adjust the trim then opened it up again I was going about 35 when all of a sudden it was like the boat went into neutral when we stopped I tried again no power it did not seem to get into gear. We were able to idle back in then I lost the forward gear and back in a bit then lost reverse then played with the cable a bit got to be able to idle back in forward gear. When I hit the gas the prop turns and cause a lot of wake action like the prop was moving like it should but no forward power someone said I might have spun the prop is the true. When i put the boat from forward or reverse it used to maeka slight grind normal telling me its going into gear now that noise is very faint bearly nothing.<br />Out of the water I put in in gear and turn the prop I was able to turn it is this right shouldn’t it be lock when in gear also heard clicking when I turned the prop and the prop moved up on every click about 16th of an inch.<br />When I took the prop off the was a lot of rubber on the shaft was worn like I spun the prop any help would be great .PS on the way home I spun a bearing on the trailer an got stuck in a parking lot for 4 hours and Mickey moused a bearing/ hub kit but it got me home I have read otehr post if it the coupler is that hard to fix x car machanic also about marking the hub do i mark the shaft and the hub and put the muffs on and put in in gear or should i put the spare prorp and drop it in the lake down the street and the coupler would i see rubber drain out when I took the drain plug out????

Your Used Prop is Junk.....<br />Everything else Seems to be Alright....<br />All the Rubber is the Give-away....

thanks bondo I see your name alot on this board and I feel better when it come from you. One thing should it make a clicking noise when in gear is that the clutch clicking and should the prop move up a bitone each click PS testing the boat with backup prop saturday.

Yes you need a prop. You can also have your old one rebuilt with a new hub for less $$$ then a new one. I carry a "comp prop" just as a spare due to the low cost but it won't leave me stranded.<br /><br />Bob

again why can I turn the prop when is in gear and it make a clicking noise should'nt it be locked

Or, you could get one of these Turning Point props with the hub and prop housing separate for about $130 aluminum/$300 stainless. I really think the all-in-one prop is a big waste.

When In gear your drive will click one way and be locked the other. This is normal. But your Prop is hosed.

well i cant check the prop now last night i was changing the bearings, the boat and trailer slipped crushing me against a tree seperated shoulder broken ribs broken colar bone 6 week till i can test the prop

seasprite....sorry to hear about your trailer incident, sounds very painful and it sucks to be laid up now that the nice weather is coming plus you sound pretty anxious to get out there. It really does sound like you have a bad prop but with regards to your coupler question, a quick and dirty way to tell if its coupler or prop, typically when the coupler goes your engine will start to over heat because if the driveshaft isn't turning then neither is the water pump impeller down in the drive plus usually the coupler will smell from burning rubber...good luck

you guys are the best turns out you where all right it was the prop that was spun and I'm getting it replaced free. I put on an old spare prop the i installed my new trailer hubs dispite my broken colar bone and 2 cracked ribs and enjoyed a day on the water a week after the accident anyways i was able to sleep better knowing it was not my lower unit becasue you the experts said it was my prop and you were all right god bless you all!!
