Outdrive halves mating surfaces

I am in the process of reassembling my R drive. I cleaned up the surfaces that mate the two halfs together and the black merc paint came off in spots. I used por-15 and repainted them but the surfaces dont look perfectly smooth. I noticed there is no gasket on the halfs so how critical is it to get these to seal. I can spend alot of time block sanding what i painted but if its not critical i would rather move on to installing it.

The only critical area is the quad ring seal area - other than that, unless the spots are high enough to cause the halves to not bolt together evenly - unusual high spots for instance - I would say you are good to go.
