Ok here is the story. My boat is a 1981 Cruiser 21ft with a mercruiser 165 inline 6cyl engine. Last week I blew the outdrive. Today I changed the outdrive with another one that I had. It came out of a 1986 Citation with a 4cyl engine. The drive on the 1986 is an alpha 1, the drive on the 81 was a M1 (i'm guessing). The gimbel bearing , boots and shift cable are all new. Also the shift shaft seal is new. I took the boat out for a test run today, and it seemed to go ok but it makes a noise when I turn left or rt. Might even make it very slightly when I go strait, but barely noticeable. I did change the input shaft with the one from the M1. 4cyl was too long. So what could be causing this noise? Sounds like the top of the drive.Help!!!!

Re: Outdrive Help!????

I'll pull it tomorrow, and check it. I greased them when I had the drive off they seemed fine.
Thanks

i had mine drive off for maintenance and thought the ujoints felt good. After i had her out for a water test... they made noise too. I just replaced them yesterday. Goodluck!

Re: Outdrive Help!????

check the engine alignment

and really grease those u-joints - til it flows out past the seals

be sure to replace the drive gasket and o-rings on the shaft too
