Ok, new gimbal, all aligned with my new tool, putting the outdrive back in and it stops about 3/4 of an inch short? I have pulled it out, rechecked, I'm in the splines of the coupler, but it stops. It there something that is common to cause a hang up I'm just not seeing? Shift cable is controlled - controls in forward - I thought I covered everything. Mercruiser Alpha One. Oh yeah, lots of grease inplace on the splines and shaft.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Outdrive Install

Make sure that the shift lever sticking out of the lower unit is still facing forward. I just had the same issue where when I went to reinstall it must have bumped the lever just enough where it wouldn't line up with the upper lever.

One other thought - where are your rams? Are they completely off, hanging down or up and sitting on top the lower units flange?

I dropped the rams to make this easier! Didn't have this issue last season. Definatley in forward.... There wouldn't be a gimbal bearing issue? It matched the old one I took out - but that is the only thing I can think of that would stop it where the outdrive is stopping?

Are you sure that you got the alignment too to go in all the way? Else, the engine could be slightly out of alignment and stopping the drive shaft short of its mark.

What do you mean you dropped the rams - they are all the way off? Or they are attached to the boat and the otehr end is laying on the floor?

Your control may be in forward, but the gearhousing may have slipped out, so the lower (intermediate in a alpha 1) ss may not be lined up straight t ahead. turn it clockwise all the way, rotate the prop CCW to make sure it locks, then use a bungee to hold it in place. That might fix it. Good luck.

I got it! It just took the right movement at the right time.

Thanks.
