Outdrive issue

1982 Merc 228 w/ an MC 3.0 outdrive or at lease thats what the the casing says. I need to verify the gear ration that in the drive How can I do this

Couple of ways. pull the plugs, put it in gear, turn the engine 10 turns or so and count prop blades (including the fraction of a turn) use your calculator.

Or, pop the top cap off the drive and count teeth.

I think the 3.0L drive is a 1.98:1 drive............ so approx 2 engine turns will equal approx 1 prop turns.

Great Now tell me, the stamp on the out drive is 1.98R is that a good combo w/ the 305 or should I look into swaping out to the 1.5

I am pretty sure that the V-8's are best paired with a 1.5:1 drive.



Props are only efficient in a narrow range of RPM. The different drive ratios allow the engine and prop to turn the most efficient RPM.

Having said that, you could try it but you'll probably find that you need to run a really high pitch prop.

Ayuh,... You'd need a prop pitched somewhere up in the High 30"s....
