Hello,

I have a 5.0 mercruiser and the out drive is leaking oil from the exhaust and has water in the oil I have replaced the entire water pump and seal but it seems to keep leaking from there after everytime I go out I have to replace the outdrive fluid. Is there a seal I'm missing and do I need to do the water pump all over again?

Thank you for reading

When a drive is leaking you have a couple choices. You can go after what you think is wrong and swap in some seals. Or if you aren't sure of which seal(s) might be leakin, you can build a pressure tester and find out for sure.

There is a sticky on building pressure testers. You need a way to add a little air, like a schrader valve, a gauge that reads air pressure, a fitting off an oil pump used to fill drives and the plumbing to hook em all together. Drive has to be completely drained for this to work.

If the seal under the impeller is what you know is leaking, you will most likely need to get the gasket kit and pull it all down to fix it.

Merc have been using the 305 since the 70's. Without knowing at least the year of the drive (the drive, NOT the boat) it could be an MC1, an R, an MR, an Alpha One or an Alpha One Gen II. (And there is no 'pre-Alpha').

Without knowing which, is difficult to advise on possible leaks.
