outdrive losing power fom engine at high speed

Hi,
I have a 1995 Cobra/Volvo sx motor and drive 5.0 liter 302. I went out last week and ran perfect. Today I went out and after planing out the boat and giving it more gas the engine was revving up but not sending the power to the drive. It works fine at lower speeds. BTW the shifting cable isnt in great shape. Could it be slipping out of gear at high speed or could it be something else? Any help would be appreciated.

It could be a slipping prop hub, or a slipping coupler hub? Take the prop off, and mark a straight line across the hub with a permanent magic marker, then take the boat out, & try it again. When you get back check to see if the line on the back of the prop, and the inner hub has moved? If so, your prop needs a rehubbing, or you need a new prop. Another way to tell, is the rubber between the prop, and it's hub gets tattered looking.
