outdrive low on oil

I have a Merc 3.0 with an alpha I outdrive. This weekend we were out tubing and when we headed back to the dock I got to the no wake zone and went to slow down the boat and it just died. Had been running great. When I tried to restart it acted like I had a weak battery, the voltage showed fine, but would barely turn over. I swapped the batteries and the same thing. Got towed in. My negative battery post seemed a little warm. Waited a little while and the boat started right up. Loaded it up went to the camp site and could not find anything loose or broken. The next day I decided to check the outdrive oil and none came the plug on the side when I opened it up. It smelled burnt. So I drained all the oil out and it was pretty dark and you could see some fine metal flakes in it. I refilled the drive and took it out, everything seemed fine, no noise or anything.
What damage could have happened, what should I do? Sorry for the long post. Thanks Zach

Time to tear the drive apart and see whats wrong. Low on oil you can bet the upper bearings are toast. Now the lower unit might be toast as well due to metal from the upper getting into the bearings in the lower.

I would never trust that drive now without a tear down. You never know when its going to let go. Also where did the oil go? Bad seals is my bet.

Sounds like it was running for a while low on fluid. The metal filings are probably from the gears running dry

I have never had any oil under the boat, in the drive and never seen oil floating in the water. I am really wondering if the mechanic that did my impellar and gimble bearing filled it up all the way. That is the only thing I can think of.

Look in the ujoint bellows. If the front seal in the drive went, it would pump the bellows full of oil.
