Outdrive not shifting into reverse

Hello,

I have a 85 Mercruiser MCM140 mated to a alpha one drive. When shifting into forward all is fine. I have no reverse though, even when i remove the lower unit shifter cable from the shift assist assembly and pull the cable all the way out, still no reverse, just a clicking at the prop. Also when i tilt the outdrive up with the boat in neutral the prop will start clicking as if trying to get into gear. I think it may be a lower unit shifter cable...just want a few opinions before removing the outdrive...Thanks..

PS....the engine revs as if it were engaged into reverse...so not the interupt system.

The shift interrupt system has absolutely nothing to do with rather it goes into gear or not.
Pull the outdrive, it's a 10 minute job, and see if reverse works at the drive.
