outdrive oil

my manual says my engine takes multigrade 10w40 and to put the same oil thats in the power plant into the stern drive. so 10w40?

1973 Glastron v184, Ford V8 302, Volvo Penta 270 outdrive

I've got a Merc so I can't really help, I think it's a completely different kind of goo that you will need for the lower. At least it is on mine.

The drive uses the same oil as the engine on the Volvo 270

They do use engine oil, not gear lube.....
Someone will know what spec is.....:)

That is correct. Use the same oil as the engine.

The 90 weight outdrive oil WILL kill the drive eventually. DO NOT USE IT!!!!
A Friend of mine had that problem this spring. He had been using 90w on the advice of someone from a West Marine Store, and it worked fine for a couple of years. But this year he went out real early in the season, April, with a water temp around 50*. The 90w oil was so thick it couldn't get to the top end of the drive and when the bearings welded themselves to the case it tore his drive shaft in half.:eek:
