outdrive or prop?

after 2200 rpm the prop feels like it stops moving the boat foward. The rpms then shoot up but if i ease up on the gas and bring the rpms back down the boat moves fine. just as long as i dont go above 2200 rpm. Could this be a problem with the prop or the outdrive?

Re: outdrive or prop?

If the prop checks out, it may just be cavitation from the tilt angle being too high.

Could be the drive also, but that depends on what type drive you have.........you didn't tell us. Mercruiser, Volvo, OMC, other?????
It could also be an engine coupler, could you smell rubber burning by any chance?

No rubber coupling in a Volvo either. Check the shift linkage is shifting the drive all the way into gear. It has a cone clutch that could be slipping. Could also be water in the gear lube. Check it, if it's milky, it will really cause it to slip and destroy that $400 clutch cone.

Doesn't really matter if it's an AQ or an SX style drive, the insides are the same, and the shift method is the same.

how can i check to see if its shifting into gear fully with it out of water. im bring the prop to a shop to get checked out tomarrow. Where is the cone clutch in the drive and is it a hard thing to replace.

Pull the back cover on the drive, then put it in gear, see if the shift mechanism goes all the way into forward and reverse. You may have to disconnect the shift cable to find out if you can turn the shift mechanism any further.

As far as changing the cone, that depends on the type drive you have, but would suggest you get a Volvo tech to replace it if necessary.
But if there is water in the gear lube, you need to find the leak and get it fixed first anyway.

Re: outdrive or prop?

Just noticed you saying the outdrive climbs up when in reverse. Sounds like the paws that lock the drive down are damaged, (common ) If you are on a trailer, pull up real hard on the leg, should not move as it takes a real hit to release the claws. If it releases easy you have worn or broken paws. Easy to replace, get a manual. regards fred
