My alpha one drive needs to be painted. When I last pulled it out of the water the whole thing had barnicles on it. I've scraped them all off with a plastic scraper. But the barnicle marks are their. What needs to be done for paint prep?

I think I would sand the barnicle marks and then primer using zinc oxide followed by a good marine paint.

Re: Outdrive painting

A metal scraper would be good . . . there is some barnacle stuff for fiberglass hulls, but I'm not sure if it is compatible with metals. So, maybe check that out.

Once you get into good paint, then re-coat with enamel, and then rough up a bit with steel wool and coat with outdrive anti-fouling . . . assuming that you will go back in the salt water. . . put your new anodes on after you are all painted.

How did the prop look?

The Prop had 1 or 2 on the inside but none on the outside. Any suggestions on what paint i should use BRAND wise? (Quicksilver by mercury?) surprisingly the outdrive was the only thing that had barnacles.

I use Rustoleum or even just a Krylon enamel. Nothing special. Then the anti-fouling is Trilux.

Hello Guys, Not jumping in, but SWD mentions using Zinc Oxide (perhaps mean Zinc Chromate) Primer. Although I always thought Zinc Chromate was the preferred primer for metals, I remember reading somewhere that this may NOT be a good idea, since the Zinc is is a less noble metal and once submerged may cause deterioration of the primer coat forming bubbles under the anti-fouling and popping it off.

Your Thoughts ???????

P.S. As for cleaning the drive, I use an inexpensive Sand Blasting gun from Sears or Harbor Freight Tools, and Crushed Walnut Shells (20-40 Grit) available from Harbor Freight Tools. The shelss are not as aggressive as "Black Beauty" or Silica Sand and do not cut into the metal, but do a superb job of blasting off barnacles and old paint, especially in those hard to reach places where sanding is impractical.
