I have a 1999 26' Osprey w/ a volovo AD-41 PA Diesel

My outdrive was coming out of gear at a slow idle.
I changed the outdrive oil .and it appeared to solve the problem.
Just came back from fishing..
First 1/2 the day it worked fine on the troll. Then it started coming out of gear again.
pushing the lever into (N) then to (D) doesnt help..i have to rev. up the motor to get
it to drop in gear!! But it will go right into (R) no problem
>once above an idle it stays in gear

>checked oil level (fine)
>oil is in good condition (12 hrs. on it)
>no water in oil
> linkage is all good

Any suggestions??

Re: outdrive problem

Remove the back cover on the drive, and see if the shift mechanism is going all the way into gear both forward and reverse. May be a cable adjustment problem, or the cable could be defective.

Re: outdrive problem

That was the first thing i did.
The cable is throwing all the way.In forward and Rev.
The mechanical arm on the outdrive is going all the way in gear also..

Re: outdrive problem

Sounds like you are in need of some upper gear housing repair, possible the shift cone is slipping. If so, the only option is a new shift cone.

Re: outdrive problem

I have a 25' Skipjack with a Volvo 41B engine and DP outdrive. I have now replaced the cone clutch twice for slipping problems at low (salmon trolling) speed. I think this was due to using synthetic gear oil, and I now use non-synthetic 75W-90 in the outdrive (no problems so far). The last time I replaced the clutch I lightly lapped the forward gear cup in case there was some glazing on it.
