outdrive reduction

Good morning all, can some explain how and where the gear reduction happens in an alpha outdrive? Is it in the upper or lower half. Or is it in both. I'm asking because I need to replace the lower half from finding a rock in the lake.

The gear reduction is in the upper housing. All lower housings have the same gear ratio .....with one exception. The 2.40:1 drives have a different ratio and FWD gear set. These are rare.
