A lot of high performance boats around here run showers on their outdrives (TRS primarily). Is this for nothing more than surface cooling? Just curious.

Re: Outdrive Shower

fish; i got one to help my alpha run cooler and hopefully get more life out of it behind our big block
all i can tell you is when i droped off plane with off it and then with it on, i could reach down from our swim platform and it feels cooler. not a real scientific test but i couldnt shoot it with my temp gun when on plane and its under water when stoped
i've been thinking of some way i could install a temp gauge on the top of the drive but havent came up with a good idea yet

Re: Outdrive Shower

For temporary use to watch drive oil temp ahile I tested some things, I drilled and tapped the upper drive housing and put an inexpensive (1/8" npt) sending unit made for engine oil temp in it and then ran the wires up to the front to the gauge. After I attached the wires to the sending unit, I just covered the wires and top of the thermocouple in a little 5300, slipped a relaively large diameter piece of heat shrink tubing down over it and then used a little pencil torch to shrink the heat shrint down to where it pushed the 5300 out on the ends and snugged down on the connection... Not perfect, but should be water tight long enough for my purposes

thats what i've been thinking tim. i'm hung up on a way to run the wire back into the drive then through the transom. best idea yet is to run in with the trim and trim position sensor wires maybe

I'm sure there are wireless set ups available that would eliminate the need for through transom wires................just a thought.

The coolers do work. They aren't that expensive. If you run the boat hard it might save you a drive.Jerry

Re: Outdrive Shower

Before I installed the cooler, the sterndrive had the white deposits on drive after use.
The white deposits were from water vaporizing on the drive.
Since installing the cooler, no more deposits.

Re: Outdrive Shower

I put the one on temporarily and so used a small drill bit to open up the port that the spedo tube goes through the transom (under the bracket) and routed it through there sealed with 5300.

on the deposits on the drive, the hard part is that since the drive shower literally washes the drive in the process of cooling it, you really don't know for sure whether the drive is running much cooler - could just be keeping the water from evaporating and depositing salts...

as an aside, I may not be an expert (I'm not), but every marine mechanic I've talked to and almost everything I've read pretty clearly indicates that the vast majority of drive failures could be avoided or at least delayed by taking care of it... running good, synthetic drive lube with the right viscosity (thicker will not flow as well and do a poorer job of carrying heat away from the bearing surfaces), marine spec so targeted to the specific conditions, change frequently if pushing the drive hard, make sure bellows not leaking (and putting water in the drive through the front seal), right amount of drive oil in it, and so on...

something else that an engine builder (almost excusively hot rod offshore, etc...) told me was that especially for alpha drives, a lot of heat in the drive is actualy put there by the exhuast routing through the drive. It would be interesting for someone with switchable exhaust to run both ways and see how much of a difference that really makes. it does certainly make some sense...

OH, and on my second upper drive half, I used a tap to slightly open up and rethread the upper port in the drive to 1/8" npt and just screwed the temp sending unit in the upper hole. I realize that the original plug won't fit right any more, but it seals just fine (pressure tested drive from botom hole before refilling with lube) and was convenient, etc... I'm just using cheap auto parts store themp units, but checked the accuracy with an oil bath to be sure they read right...

Re: Outdrive Shower

The big question, is do you need a drive shower??
If you do a gear lube change at the end of the season during winterization or change your gear lube every 100 hrs. (which ever comes first), LOOK at the oil. Is it green and about the same color as it was when you put it in, or does it look black and smell burned.
IF it looks similar to what you took out, then NO, you do not need a drive shower.
They are good for those boats that go on long runs of over an hour on plane where the drive never has a chance to cool down by being completely in the water. That doesn't happen on most boats.
The TRS drives are use a lot with big engines in big boats, at high speeds & high loads.
