Outdrive slipping

I have 1998 larson 226 lxi, 5.0 gl volvo penta. The engine rpm starts to go up when shifting in forward Would this be a prop or gear causing this, it goes in reverse ok some say ist a cone gear some say prop

Sounds like the cone clutch. The prop would slip in both directions.

I would start by marking the prop hub to see if it is slipping. Start with the easiest to diagnose first.
