Outdrive sporadically not going into forward or reverse

Good morning,

I own a 2002 Chaparral Sunesta 262 with a Volvo Penta SX duo prop outdrive.

The lower unit was worked on over the winter, a new shifter cable was installed. Currently the outdrive will sporadically not go into drive or reverse. I have been able to get it to go into gear by tilting the outdrive up and putting the boat into gear and moving the prop both in forward and reverse, of course while e boat is not running. This occasionally will work to engage the outdrive once I start the boat. I do not know if this is just by luck or actually doing something. When in reverse the prop will spend freely in one direction, and engage in the other. When in forward it will engage in one direction and then spin the other direction approximately a turn and bind up. It almost feels like it is engaging in both directions. During the time the outdrive is stuck in "neutral", the shift cable & shift plate operate normally.

The forward/reverse cone was replaced along with the shift mechanism, which was of no help. The last time it would not go into gear, I shifted into reverse with a little "authority" and the boat went into gear at a higher RPM with a considerable "bang". I was able to then drive the boat to the launch and trailer it out of the water.

Is there any history of anything like this happening?

Does anyone have an idea of what could be happening?

Thanks,
