Outdrive tilt, how much when not in use

I read that the outdrive should be left in the full down position during a layup to avoid setting the bellows. Why do my neighbors always leave their outdrives in the full up (trailer) position while in the water during the week? Doesn't that put unnecessary stress on the bellows and risk splitting them and sinking?

You are more informed (smarter) then they are.

The bellows is made to stay up for short periods. Constant use in the extended position will eventually cause problems.

The possible reason for leaving in the up position is to prevent the drive from bottoming out and/or getting sand/mud in the inlet.

Of course I put mine in the trailer position to trailer but once I am home I let it all the way down.
