Ok so I've done research and nothing really explains my problem. I have a 92 190 chaparral with a 4.3. Previous put a new motor in it and didnt align the engine and trashed the coupler. I have replaced the coupler with the new style (grease fitting) and new drive shaft, I also replaced the nylon spacers on the transom engine mount. I've got the engine back in and aligned best I can (alignment tool slides in with little effort and spins free.) But the outdrive absolutely will not go in!!! I have tried for 3 days and it stops and have half an inch before I even reach the bolts on the outdrive bell housing. Any suggestions?

Yep control is in forward and shift mechanism is lining up. But it's not going far enough for the little groove and L peice on the outdrive to slide together.

And I've bought 2 different set of nylon spacers for the rear transom mount. One came with a spiral lock washer and the other came with a regular washer that went in the middle of the nylon washer. Using the spiral lock washer and looking through the transom you can tell the rear of the engine is way to high. Using the other type and I can get it pretty well aligned. It seem as if the rear of the engine is still a tad high but the alignment tool slides in with little effort and can spin with a few fingers. This is with the front engine mounts adjusted all the way down but the outdrive will not go on no matter how much effort.

It goes in and out with 2 fingers and drive will not go on, I would say there is something wrong with your alignment tool

bought 2 different set of nylon spacers for the rear transom mount.

If different spacers are needed, then need to look close at the rear mounts, they may need replacing

Was the gimbal bearing replaced, and if so are you centering it before each alignment bar check?

The gimbal bearing was replaced and I am centering it up. The tool wont slide in with 2 fingers just have push it a little then it will rotate with 3 fingers. And the reason I bought new nylon washers was because the previous owner didnt install any when he put the engine back in. Their was 2 different styles offered so I got both cause didnt know what it required.

With it taking more then 2 fingers its not right yet
Lift the motor from the thermostat housing bolts just enough to lift off the lower nuts. Bring nuts up even and start adjustments again turning each nut the same amount

If that doesn't work
front engine mounts adjusted all the way down

Then there is an issue with the rear mounts or transom has shifted or gotten soft

I been in the same situation. I used a 2x4 across the back of drive and lightly tapped on with hammer against wood. I am sure I will spend time in Hell for doing that. My alignment was right. Never had an issue the 30 years i owned the boat

Welp I done like you said and used the d ring to lift off the mounts and snug the bolts under it. Started the alignment that way and got it perfect and outdrive slid right on. I had a chain on the intake I used to pull the engine so was doing it that way. One mount must be off a little from the other. But none the less it slid on!!! Much appreciated guys!!
