Hello everyone,Im new here so bare with me if i sound so lost..
I have a 1987 18' ebbtide riveria w/165 "470"(alphah one) ,I purchased the boat from a friend who was in dire need of some money,I knew the outdrive was trashed because he didnt fill it up with lube after a impeller service..So i went to the local boat shop here to see about another one or perhaps a rebuilt one..He had a used one on the same yr boat and was in good shape.so i purchased the whole unit for 400 dollars.so i brought it home installed a new impeller and lubed it back up,i installed the unit BUT it wouldnt engage right,so i looked closer and have realized the unit shifter on the outdrive turned the differant direction then the old one?I looked at the old one again and with the shifter in the foward position the prop wants to go reverse, the new one when foward spins the right way, clockwise..(standing behind prop)the shifter turns clockwise? The new one counter clocwise? The cable is trying to spin the shifter the wrong way and binding up,it wont turn cause it turning the wrong way? When i push the throttle foward the cable comes out of the gimle? Is the old outdrive a counter rotate and why would it be on a single engine boat?is the a way to manipulate the cables to make this work ?? please help...

thanks alot

Re: outdrive?

Sounds like you should visit the "Adults Only" sticky thread at the top of this forum page and download the proper manual for your motor and drive. Don S has gone all out to make this info available to all.

Re: outdrive?

for a normal ratation drive. when testing shift. looking at it from the aft side looking fwd.

fwd=prop locks ccw and ratchets cw
neutral=prop freewheels both directions, w/o feel or sound
rev=prop locks cw and ratchets ccw

this is a pic of a 1 drive (similar to your alpha1) in neutral.

this is looking at the coupler between the upper and the bell housing. when it's in fwd. the coupler appears parallel to the boat, straight fwd.
when in neu. it looks like the pic.
when in rev. the coupler moves further to port.

in the pic i'm laying on my back under the drive, looking aft at it, in front of the drive. trimmed up a bit

while i'm no pro. i believe the counter rotation for twin engines is done in the lower of a alpha1 version drive.

Re: outdrive?

look again ,it`s in the manual. sounds like the shift shoe was not lined up correctly with the splined shaft in the lower unit. The splined shaft is turned fully clockwise ,then the shoe slides on in a straight line when you have everything in fwd gear for the install.
