Re: Outdrives

I am in the process of rebuilding a 1977 MerCruiser 120/140 (pre-alpha) that has some broken teeth on upper gears. There are some special tools that would help but I was able to dismantle my upper unit without them. There is a spanner wrench that will probably be necessary for the lower unit but it is kinda pricey. If your mechanically inclined you can probably disassemble the upper no problem. I believe you will probably need a dial indicator and some specs to properly rebuild the outdrive. This is my first boat and I am learning as I go. I haven't bought any manuals yet but am using the info on www.mercstuff.com

If you want, I have some digital pics I took and can explain what I did to dismantle the two units and remove the gear assemblies from the upper.

Only thing I am not encouraged about is the cost of these parts. It is outrageous. A shaft and gear and bearing cost from 200 to 400 and probably even more for some of the bigger outdrives. The biggest drawback I can think of is buying the parts and not rebuilding correctly and finding broken teeth and messed up bearing after you spend so much money.

Re: Outdrives

it really depends on your skills there are shop manuals made for prety much every drive and each one needs special tools to do most repiars.

i find the hardest part is get it apart with out breaking it(water can play hell sticking parts together) after that it is no harder than any other machine repiar

tommays

Re: Outdrives

Three pieces of advice if you want to rebuild a leg.

1) get the manual
2) get the manual
3) get the manual

Did I mention that you should get the manual?

If you post the leg serial number or the year I'll give you the Mercruiser genuine manual number.

Chris..........
