Outside USA-Standard 91 or Premium 98 what should I use in a 2004 3.0ltr MerCruiser?

I am in Australia and have been using Premium unleaded 98, however noticed on muffs it blows a bit of black smoke on start up and also a puff when revved. Is this because the fuel is to rich and would I be better of using the more Standard unleaded 91?

Manual only says (for outside USA and Canada) "90 RON minimum. Premium 98 RON is also acceptable".

Anyone out there that has used both and can give me some feedback on what they thought? Or could the smoke be a sign of something else?

Thanks,

Howdy,

You won't notice any difference running 90 vs 87 here in the states.

The puff of smoke is most likely due to the choke being maladjusted.

You're wasting your money using any octane higher than minimum required.

Rick

Micheal,

The black smoke could also be normal as the marine carbies are set quite rich... Especially on acceleration..

Isn't it a bit cold for you to be outside at the moment? How's Lake Burley-Griffin?

I started to write a bit about Octanes, then did a little research to check I had the right facts... I deleted everything and will point you at the wiki I found... That's enough to confuse everybody... :D :D :D

Hey Chris,

Bloody oath mate it is freezing here. Worst still unfortunately we are so over governed we can not have any petrol powered crafts on our beautiful 3 manmade lakes in Canberra. Fortunately the south coast is under 2 hours away and lake Burrinjuck (near Yass) is 45 mins away so we still get out ever couple of weeks this time of year just to run some water through and keep everything ticking over. But on boat only, no one in the water that's for sure.

Cheers, Michael

The worst part about all this is we've all been brainwashed for years by motor fuel retailers that higher octane fuels were "better" for our engines for a variety of (wrong) reasons.

Marketing propaganda and cradle-to-grave indoctrination is a hard NUT to crack!!!

Being well (and correctly) informed is the answer and a good solution to many of today's problems. One of the first things the revolutionaries did in October 1917 was to destroy 'knowledge'. That destruction took the form of both books and people. The top intellectual people were all killed or imprisoned. Keeping the general populous uninformed and ignorant is how they maintained control for almost 70 years.

Governments have a vested interest in keep the population dumb and stupid... They can implement just about anything they want and a dumb population will just follow like stupid sheep.

My belief is that we should question EVERYTHING put to us by 'powers'. Do your own investigation (the information is out there, just gotta look for it) and draw your own conclusions....

Stay informed, stay smart, watch with your eyes open....

Thanks guys.. :D
