Okay here is my situation. I have a 93 Chriscraft 197 Concept with a Ford 302 (5.0) with a Cobra Omc outdrive. The boat and motor and drive are in excelent condition, garage kept with cover since taken off show room floor. I am the only owner. 2 weekends ago the boat started over heating and so I pulled it off the water and replaced the water pump impellor and the "t" stat. Gaskets and seals and all that good stuff. Took it out last weekend and she ran fine for about 3 hours. Took her off the water for 5 hours or so and when we went back out, she overheated again in about 10 min of run time in the water. Now it will run fine and hold good temp, around 165 with the hose and muffs on. Checked the "t" stat housing, no leakes, checked the new impellor, looks good, everything lines up. I "think" that I have some of the old impellor lodged in the system somewhere impeading my water flow.... I plan on flushing the system this weekend. Does anyone have anyother ideas or suggestions to try? I am open to any and all advice. Thanks in advance....

Re: Over heating issues

I had a similar over heating issue a few weeks ago. Impeller was shredded and I found chunks of it all over the place. I ended up keeping the impeller off while I flushed water from the t-stat housing ... several pieces came out. Also found a few in the steering cooler, lower drive, and stuck in the intake holes on the lower drive.

Good times!

You can check out the suggestions I was given in my posts about a 1992 King Cobra Overheating, etc...

Not sure how to embed links here...or I would link it.

Re: Over heating issues

Thanks for the advise. Was it real difficult to get the old impellor piece's out of the steering cooler and lower drive? Good advise on taking off the new impellor when flushing, I didn't think about that.

Re: Over heating issues

Some of the hoses were easier than others. One or more of the gurus on the forum suggested leaving impeller off and using garden hose w/nozzle and forcing water out from t-stat housing. They even ref a hose # from a diagram, which made it easy to find. I noticed more pieces in lower drive as well. All in all not too difficult. My boat hasn't overheated since.

Re: Over heating issues

Okay, so I flushed the system, wasn't able to really get any old pieces out, that I could find..... is it possible that I didn't allow it to run long enough? Any other suggestions or ideas? I am in the process of changing the gear casing lube and oil. Don't think that will help, or maybe it will, I don't know, I am running out of ideas. HELP!! Please....
