Over torqued some bolts. What would you do?

I over torqued my exhaust cover bolts, I didn't just over torque them I OVER TORQUED them. I wasn't wearing my glasses when I read the torque values in the manual and instead of 60-84 inch pounds I read 160. As I tightened them I kept thinking this can't be right but didn't go back and check. Luckly I didn't break any but was wondering, would I be better off to back them off and re-torque or just leave them?

It might sound like an overkill but I'd pull them out & start again with new bolts & new gaskets.

The reason for torqueing bolts is to maintain an even and consistant tightness/pressure on the piece being torqued. The only reason I can think of for re-doing them is, it would make the job easier for the next guy who has to take them out. Personally, I would re-do them before they "set" or no one will get them out. :)

Best case scenario install new bolts at correct torque, 2nd choice re-torque old bolts. I would probably just re-torque. 160 inch pounds is only 13.3 ft lbs as opposed to 84/7. Not a good idea to leave it over torqued.

I agree with the others to replace bolts, gasket, and re torque to specs. Besides head bolts, those exhaust cover bolts break easily in the best situations. I wouldn't want those overstretched bolts to have a chance to build-up any resistance with use...remember the "next guy" may be you.

Are these 1/4 x 20 bolts?, If so and they are Gade 8 bolts, 75% yield (max torgue) on a plain bolt is 13 ft.lbs. and zinc coated bolts are 14 ft.lbs. If they are grade 8, I would just retorque those bolts, you haven't hurt them. I would be more concerned with the threaded holes if they were aluminum. Definantly retorque them before running the motor again in any case. If they are grade 5 then the values would be 9 & 10ft.lbs.

Nah, they aren't even Grade 5.
