Overcharging Evinrude

My friends 72 100 hp evinrude is having problems and someone suggested checking to see if it's over charging. So we are guessing with it running we disconnect the battery and check voltage across the wires but if it is overcharging what is our next step? Is there a regulator or something we need to look at first?

Thanks

Stop guessing.-----Do not disconnect battery on a running motor.----Motor will stop if you disconnect the battery.-----What problems is he having ?

Boat runs fine for about 5 minutes the. Dies like you shut the key off. Starts right back up and runs fine for a couple minutes then dies again. Next startup it will only run like every other cylinder is firing. His mechanic he had has replaced coils and power pack and rebuilt carburetors. Yeah a lot of cash for not fix. On a previous post I made about it o. Here I was instructed to see if it was over charging. Willing for any ideas.

See if you can keep it running by squeezing the bulb on the fuel line.
If so then inspect the fuel delivery.
Rebuild or replace the fuel pump if needed.

When it dies it shuts off like you turn the key off. It does also have a new fuel pump, lines and bulb.

Never, ever disconnect the battery when running! Doig so is likely to destroy the rectifier, if not more. But that will fix your suspected overcharging--(it won't charge at all).

Along that line of thought, the first thing you should do is check the battery and battery terminals. Loose or corroded connections there are an ignition system killer. Don't just look at them and wiggle them. Remove them and clean shiny bright and reinstall tightly. You did do that, right?

EDIT: Jumper cables are the worst kind of loose/poor connections.
