Force 88/125.Starts about 13v then the faster it goes the higher the voltage go'es.Levels off about 16.2
I'm thinking the regulator but I don't have access to the motor to test it.The owner said he's replaced the reg already.
Any thoughts. The boats about 125mi away from me.

Thanks,Jerry

Re: Overcharging.

1988 125HP motors came from the factory with a Rectifier. They didn't start using the Rectifier/Regulators until the early or mid 1990's. My 1988 125 motor originally had a Rectifier and it would go up to around 16 volts when I was 3500 RPM's or higher. I think what you're seeing is pretty much normal with a Rectifier based charging system. I replaced my Rectifier with a Rectifier/Regulator and now my max voltage is 14.5. Not sure if it has "fixed" anything because I never saw any evidence that the 16 volts was doing any harm to anything. My fish finder is rated anywhere from 10 - 18 volts.

Re: Overcharging.

What pnwboat said.

Also, the battery is an active component in the system and acts to absorb the voltage.

And no, it will not kill the battery, unless he runs it for days on end and it causes the battery to cook. Highly unlikely on a boat.

What PNW and Roscoe said. If he's having issues he can get a regulator from an old school chrysler off of ebay for a good price.
