Overcharging?

I have a Johnson 115 (1970 model) which may be overcharging the battery.

Using a multimeter I took the following readings from the battery:

Motor off: 12.6
Motor on (idle) 12.9 increasing to 14
Mid range 15 to 16
WOT 16.8 to 17.1

I've tested with two different batteries, both of which are fully charged. Both the rectifier and regulator checked out fine by my marine dealer

Are the readings above anything to be concerned about?

Re: Overcharging?

Sounds normal for a NON-regulated system. My bet is you just have a rectifier and not a regulator/rectifier. Just keep the battery topped off with fluid. If your worried turn somthing on to reduce the voltage.

However they do make a kit to install the regulator type.

Re: Overcharging?

Attention Grima,

Do you need an original factory service manual for your motor. I have one for sale on ebay. The list price is $10.00 + 3.20 shipping. If you don't ebay and would like to buy the manual, let me know. E-mail me at arlan@pldi.net If it doesn't sell there, you can buy it next week. They are the best manual for your motor and the controls. Loaded with exact specs, test procedures, pictures, and diagrams for servicing your motor. 100 times better than an aftermarket manual.

Arlan

Re: Overcharging?

Trent

thanks for the advice. The regulator and rectifier are two seperate units on my model. I took both of them off, as well as something called 'Dog's balls' (not sure what they do). The marine dealer said that all three checked out, and that the regulator cut out as it's meant to, however he couldn't tell me the exact voltage it cut out at.
