I'm new to this game and need some pointers. I've brought a full carb kit with needles, gaskets and the like, a selco manual, and have read about how you clean out a carb, e.g. with high pressured air.

I've tried to get hold of carb cleaner, but finding it hard to come by. One guy that has had quite a lot of experience with motors said use petrol. Any other suggestions?

And also any tips whilst cleaning the carb, what to pay attention to etc?

Cheers, Ryan.

If you really can't find any automotive type carb cleaners, preferrably in spray cans, due to your location, you can get by with other solvents. Something more aggressive than petrol (petrol is what gummed it up in the first place). As long as the plastic and rubber parts have been removed, lacquer thinner will do in a pinch.

I looked at a can I have and it contains Toluene and Acetone. These are listed, but it may contain others.

Here's a tip. If your carbs have mixture adjustment screws, turn them inward while carefully counting the number of turns until they are lightly seated. Mark the carb (#1 , #2, etc) and then note the adjustment(s) for that carb so when its reassembled, you can set the screws exactly as they were before. Otherwise I guarantee you will be back here asking how to set those. As for cleaning, make sure every passage and every jet is squeaky clean. Make sure the float level is set to specification upon reassembly.

Ryan. This is the NON-REPAIR forum.

It seems to me that you would get much more useful advice if you would tell us what engine you are working on, why you are working on it and post your question in the correct Troubles/Repair forum.

Thanks. :)
