I have an overheat alarm that I need to hook up on my 98 175. I do not have the plugs on wiring harness everything is hard wired. How do I connect the alarm to wiring harness. All Im concerned with is overheat alarm the vro has been removed. The alarm has a purple wire and a brown with blue stripe wire.

Purple wire is for ign accessory power to the alarm. That is correct. The senders (one on each cylinder head), are connected together and to the negative side of the alarm. They should be tan/blue, near the senders, and all tan as they leave the motor. When the motor overheats, the senders will ground setting off the alarm. In addition, the power pack will get the overheat signal and kill spark to 1/2 the motor.

I am asking this question for a friend he has a mid 80's evinrude 140. His alarm continually sounds when he cranks it up. Would that mean one of the senders is bad and if so how do we check them out.
